- Multiple repairs in the last 1–2 years. Throwing $500–$1,500 at an aging system multiple times per season is usually more expensive than financing a new one.
- R-22 refrigerant. R-22 was phased out of production in 2020 and is now extremely expensive when available at all. R-22 systems are a strong replacement candidate.
- Energy bills creeping up despite same usage. System efficiency degrades over time. A 12-year-old SEER 13 system is probably operating well below its rated efficiency by now.
- Hot and cold spots throughout the house. If certain rooms never cool properly, the system may have been wrong-sized from the start. New install is the chance to fix it.
- Compressor failure on an older system. Compressor replacement on a 12+ year old system rarely makes financial sense versus replacement.

⚠️ Important 2026 Update: Refrigerant Regulations
Starting January 1, 2026, California requires new residential air conditioners and heat pumps to use refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 700 or lower to qualify for state-managed rebate programs. Practically, this means new equipment uses A2L refrigerants like R-32 or R-454B — not the older R-410A.
What this means for you:
- All new equipment we install meets the 2026 refrigerant requirement. There’s no extra cost or complication for you.
- If you’re shopping around and seeing prices on R-410A systems from clearance lists, those systems may not qualify for current California rebates. Verify with the contractor before purchase.
- R-410A systems still work and are still legal to install — they just don’t qualify for state rebates going forward, and R-410A refrigerant itself is being phased down in production.
- If a contractor is offering a notably-cheap quote on a “great deal” AC, ask which refrigerant the equipment uses. The answer matters.

Do you handle the permit and inspection?
Yes. AC installations in California require a city permit and an inspection. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection with the city, and handle the entire process so you don’t have to. Beware of any contractor who suggests skipping the permit “to save money” — unpermitted work creates problems when selling your home and can void your equipment warranty.
Do I need to replace my furnace at the same time?
Not necessarily. If your furnace is relatively new and in good condition, it can stay. If your furnace is also aging (12+ years old), it usually makes financial sense to replace both at the same time. The labor overlaps significantly, and you save on the second visit. What’s the warranty on a new installation?
